Supportive housing is moving forward here in Illinois. Supportive housing provides another community living option for individuals with disabilities.

So many good people made this happen!

Here is the first video created by the CSH national office about a project the Illinois CSH Office has been nurturing for the past several years (with a grant from the Illinois Council – ICDD) Thanks to Julie Verdu and Adam Cooper on their leadership in speaking up and not accepting the status quo. Thanks to Missy Kichline who helped to lead a group of families and self-advocates with the ongoing support of the Statewide Housing and Employment Coordinator, Lore Baker and the support of both Secretary Dimas of the Illinois Departmen of Human Services and Division Director Greg Fenton. They along with all of their staff, along with staff at Developmental Services of Metro East (DDS) (Jane Nesbit and Staff) and Trinity Services of Mascoutah (Mike Lowry) all make this possible. I also want to give a shout out to the public housing authority in Madison County that was willing to create a fully accessible and beautiful building in their portfolio to better meet the needs of persons with disabilities. There are just too many people to thank for creating this great opportunity for 6 individuals who might have been asked to live in a group home in an earlier time far away from their family. Now they have their own apartment in the neighborhood they grew up in!

Thanks everyone!

I know the new residents love their apartments and this opportunity.
Someday this will become standard practice.
It takes a village to create supportive housing!
