Join The Arc for an E-Learning Series presentationon the impact of the “R” word, bullying and the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign. On July 19 from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. ET, learn how to find your voice and encourage others to find theirs to speak out against bullying towards individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Create communities of acceptance and respect in your area. Learn where to go to find valuable resources that will help you tackle bullying in your community. This one-hour educational opportunity will be presented by Special Olympic youth leaders Kara Fleming and Jason Newbury. Spread the Word to End the Word, a campaign created by young people, is an ongoing effort to raise the consciousness of society about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the word “retard(ed)”. Respectful and inclusive language is essential to the movement for the dignity and humanity of people with intellectual disabilities; however, much of society does not recognize the dehumanizing and exclusive effects of the R-word.
