In addition to Employment First, we need to begin to look at other housing opportunities for individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.

Bob Palmer, Policy Director Housing Action Illinois is a leader in affordable housing in Illinois and I am starting a relationship between Housing Action Illinois and The Arc. We need to be working together to expand housing options and I encourage you to do so as well.

A place to start would be their Housing Matters Conference below..

Conference Program

For our Opening Plenary, we are pleased to have Ralph Martire, Executive Director of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, join us again to provide an update on the state budget situation, particularly how the “stopgap budget” passed in June 2016 impacts Illinois’ short- and long-term fiscal condition and what choices will continue to face our elected leaders after the November election. We are also excited to welcome Diane Yentel, the new President and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, for our Closing Plenary; she will discuss how affordable housing and anti-poverty issues have been framed during the federal election season and identify key issues to focus on after the election.

We have 5 different tracks for our workshop sessions, though you’re welcome to mix and match! Topics subject to change.

Public Policy Advocacy: Consumer engagement and organizing strategies (two sessions); effective media relations; Housing Action’s 2017 advocacy agenda

Ending Homelessness: Transitional housing for victims of intimate partner violence; housing and health initiatives; findings and recommendations of Supportive Housing Working Group; HUD guidance on housing for people with criminal records

Affordable Housing Development and Management: Environmental and economic sustainability; historic preservation and community development; rural housing; strong homes model

Housing Counseling: New models of counseling; fair lending for housing counselors; energy efficiency; government updates with HUD and IHDA

Organizational Leadership: CRA and affirmatively furthering fair housing (two sessions); Department of Labor overtime rules; advocacy and lobbying issues for nonprofits
