The State of Illinois has announced plans to close two of its eight remaining state operated Developmental Centers for people with disabilities. This is such great news and part of a greater advocacy effort that we have invested so much time and energy in for years. Remember all our work on the “Blueprint for System Redesign in Illinois”?
But, this is a scary time for those who will be making that transition to the community. The individuals, their loved ones AND Governor Quinn need our support.
The “Going Home: Life in the Community” Facebook page has been created as a place for us to share updates and success stories so that all can see what an opportunity this is.
We need your support now… in just three ways.. AND they’re all fun and easy.
Please send me pictures and quotes of yourself and/or your loved one being successful in the community.
Regularly check out our page and comment on the posts you see there. That will provide your networks of friends and advocates an opportunity to see our page and comment too… This will help us “go viral”, an opportunity for those outside the disability community to understand and honor those with disabilities in Illinois.
