Today I have meetings with Executive Directors in The Arc. One of the main topics for this meeting is “Employment First”. Because of Ligas, the Rebalancing Initiative and the changing disability system here in Illinois, employment and self employment is fast becoming the first option for community services. We are bringing in Marsie Frawley who is an expert on employment and people with disabilities. This should be a great discussion.On a related topic, The National Disability Rights Network yesterday released a new report on the state of segregated employment (sheltered workshops) across the US. NDRN is the national umbrella organization for state protection and advocacy agencies—our own here in Illinois is Equip for Equality. On Thursday I head back to the Capitol for meetings with Director Casey and other advocates.
