Siblings Can Play an Important Role in Supported Decision-
Making

The Sibling Leadership Network is a proud partner of the National Resource Center for
Supported Decision-Making (NRC-SDM), an initiative focused on the Right to Make
Choices. As the NRC-SDM website explains, “Supported Decision-Making is just a
fancy way of describing how we all make choices. We all need help making decisions
, every single day.”

People with disabilities have the same rights as everyone else, and Supported
Decision-Making is a way to ensure that they have the assistance to make decisions
that impact their lives. According to Jonathan G. Martinis, “Supported Decision-Making
[is] an alternative to guardianship where people make their own decisions, without a
guardian, while receiving the help they need and want to do so.” Siblings of people
with disabilities can provide this help to our brothers and sisters.

To learn more, you can visit the National Resource Center for Supported Decision-
Making
for a wealth of information on Supported Decision-Making.
