EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
STATEWIDE INDEPENDENT LIVING COUNCIL OF ILLINOIS
The Statewide Independent Living Council (“SILC” and sometimes the “Council”) of Illinois
is responsible for providing the leadership, education, information, and planning required
to support independent living services in Illinois. The SILC is specifically responsible for
developing and monitoring the implementation of the State Plan for Independent Living
that guides federal funding of Centers for Independent Living.
The Executive Director is accountable to the Board of Directors of this Governor-appointed
Council and is responsible for the overall administration, management, coordination and
operation of all SILC activities in accordance with the SILC’s stated mission and purpose.
He/she communicates with SILC’s partner organizations, state departments of government,
other statewide disability organizations and with the Illinois legislature regarding the
independent living needs of Illinois residents with disabilities, and performs such other duties
as may be assigned by the Board of Directors from time to time.
Qualifications: Personal experience with disability and commitment to the independent living
philosophy and advocacy for the rights of persons with disabilities is very important.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent disability rights/independent living experience plus at least
three years administrative/managerial experience is required. The successful candidate will
have strong communication skills, a demonstrated history of leadership, and knowledge of
not-for-profit guidelines. The ability to travel is also required.
