We are going for a veto override in November!
That is the decision of the Value the Work Coalition at its meeting on Thursday. After conferring with our House Sponsor Robin Gable and Senate Sponsor Heather Steans the Coalition fully supports an override of the Governor’s veto of House Bill 5931. HB 5931 will raise the starting wage for Direct Support Professionals to $15.00 per hour and also increase the wages of QIDP’s, Individual Service Coordinators, Nurses, etc.
An action plan and calendar is now being developed by the Coalition but in the meantime, you should contact your State Senators and House Representatives and all candidates running for offices and ask them to publically commit to voting for the override of House Bill 5931!
House Bill 5931 passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 67 yes to 47 no votes. We will need 71 votes to override the Governor’s veto in the House.

House Bill 5931 passed the Senate by a vote of 40 yes to 18 no votes. We need 36 votes to override the Governor’s veto in the Senate.

A veto override will require a supermajority in both the House and Senate so our work is really cut out for us.
We need you to take action now. The message is very simple, “Will you vote to override House Bill 5931, YES or NO.”
Once your legislator has taken a position on the override of House Bill 5931, let me know because we are keeping a scorecard on the vote totals.
The vote in both the House and Senate will be during the fall override session of the Illinois General Assembly which is scheduled for November 15th to 17th and November 29th to December 1st.
We shall overcome or should I say “OVERIDE?”
