STATEMENT FROM THE ARC OF ILLINOS ABOUT CLOSING OF STATE INSTITUTIONS

“On behalf of the 220,000 people with disabilities and their families that we represent I commend Governor Quinn for his vision to begin the closures of state institutions and offer people with disabilities the opportunity to live life with dignity and independence. Community living offers around the clock care but unlike institutions it allows people with disabilities to live close to family and friends and gives them the freedom to be part of a community. Our current system is antiquated, in fact only two states warehouse more people in institutions than Illinois.13 states and the District of Columbia have closed all state institutions following more than 30 national studies that prove community living provides the best care. This is about making sure people with disabilities enjoy the same freedoms and opportunities as everyone else.

Thank you Governor Quinn for including the advocacy community in the decision making process and for your leadership on this critical issue.”
