Earlier this week we hosted a mini advocacy day in the Capitol to talk to Representatives and
Senators about success stories of individuals who have moved out of state institutions and are
now living a full life in the community. We talked to a great number of legislator dis-spelling myths
and informing legislators that the community is safer, healthier and guardian satisfaction is very
high once individuals move to the community.

Special thanks to the Alliance, Individual Advocacy Group, SouthStar Services and the Illinois Council
on Developmental Disabilities for making these days a great success.

Have you talked to your legislators about the importance of rebalancing the disability system and
supporting community living?

Have you invited your legislators to visit a group home so they can learn first hand the benefits of
living in the community?

Senator Mulroe hosted our group on the floor of the Senate!

Our meeting with Senate Republican Leader Radogno

Senator Eddie! Last year he was living in a state institution!

Sue and Veronica in the Senate. Both women were living in institutions for many
years.

Craig and Amanda getting ready to talk with legislators in the Capitol. Last year Craig was in a
state institution.

Let me know about your success stories so we can share them with policy makers.
