SUMMARY:Comprehensive Data Sets for Assistive Technology Goals
DESCRIPTION:Session Description:  Assistive technology interventions are only as good as the supports provided for successful implementation. This session will give insight on how to write comprehensive and achievable supports to ensure the person is successful with their devices. We will look at creative data sets to monitor progress and improve AT supports\, that can be generalized to all person-centered goals. We’ll also showcase some innovative technologies that have helped people increase their independence. \nSpeaker Bio:  Krista Opstedal has worked with people with disabilities for over 12 years. In 2013 she built the Coordinator of Assistive Technology position at Kalix from the ground up. The position started as an in-house assistive technology program\, responsible for researching and developing individualized assistive technology supports. Since the program’s inception\, Krista has grown it to include sensory integration for those who are aging and on the Autism spectrum\, and her greatest passion; empowering people with disabilities to understand and advocate for their rights. Krista leads several advisory boards and committees and is an experienced speaker at regional and national conferences. During her free time\, you can find Krista listening to Hamilton and Photoshopping her kids and cat\, Tuna\, into a variety of bizarre scenarios. \nCEUs:  We will be offering CEUs for this event. \nCost:  \nMembers:  $20.00 \nNon-Members:  $25.00 \nRegister Now!

SUMMARY:Create Your Own Smart Home Using Off-The-Shelf Products
DESCRIPTION:Session Description:  By popular request\, the TEC Lab will be hosting a session to help you create your very own smart home (or smart environment) using off the shelf products.  The availability (and\, relative affordability) of mainstream “smart” devices means that people with disabilities no longer have to rely on others to fully access and navigate their environments.  In addition\, such commercially available products are universally designed to benefit all people – single use and cumbersome devices are no longer the norm for people with disabilities.  In this session\, presenters will demonstrate how to pair smart plugs and other accessories with a virtual assistant to automate your environment and create routines. \nSpeaker Bio:  Richard Harrington has worked with people with disabilities for over 20 years.  He is a founding member of the Technology Enhancing Capabilities Lab (TEC Lab) – a division of Trinity Services\, Inc.  Prior to coming to Illinois\, Richard was employed by a community support provider for 14 years fulfilling a number of roles – from a direct supporter to case manager to assistive technology professional.  In his position as an AT professional he was responsible for researching\, developing and implementing a wide variety of assistive technologies for people with developmental and physical disabilities.  Richard is a self-proclaimed “gadget guy\,” who has a passion for helping people be as independent as possible. His open-minded approach and extensive knowledge of assistive technology make him a highly sought after resource for the people served\, families and staff members. Richard is an experienced speaker at regional and national conferences. \nSpeaker Bio:  Connie Melvin is a founding member of the Technology Enhancing Capabilities Lab (TEC Lab) – a division of Trinity Services\, Inc.  She also serves as the Director of the National Association of QIDPs – a member association dedicated to providing cutting edge tools\, information\, and resources to disability professionals across the country.  Prior to coming to Illinois\, Connie developed an assistive technology program from the ground up for a large community-based provider and spearheaded the initiative for assistive technology adoption in another state\, which resulted in a number of successful pilot programs as well as the implementation of highly regarded best practices.  In addition to her work in the area of assistive technology\, Connie has served a case manager\, staff trainer\, and supervisor of residential services.  A lifelong student herself\, she recognizes the value in providing learning opportunities to others and\, as a result\, has designed and hosted several regional and national conferences dedicated to this purpose.  Connie is a highly sought speaker and consultant.  She is graduate of the National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities and earned her MA in Counseling Psychology & Education. \nCEUs:  We will be offering CEUs for this event. \nCost: \nMember: $20.00 \nNon-Member: $25.00 \n Register Now!
