DESCRIPTION:A new webinar series provides an online space for parents and caregivers to access educational workshops\, learn about resources and discuss strategies and support needs. \nThe series is open to all parents and caregivers of children enrolled with the University of Illinois Chicago’s Division of Specialized Care for Children (DSCC). \nIt’s the result of a partnership between DSCC and UIC’s Leadership and Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities Program (IL LEND). \nThere is no cost for families to participate. \nPlease note this workshop series now has a parent education focus rather than a traditional support group. \nThe group will meet via Zoom on the third Wednesday of the month through April. \nWorkshops topics may include: \n\nRespite care\nFeeding\nVentilator maintenance/cleaning\nTransportation\nNavigating relationships with staff\n\nThe workshop schedule is for the following dates from 7 to 8 p.m.: \n\nFeb. 16\nMarch 16\nApril 20\n\nThe topic for the Feb. 16 session is Early Intervention. DESCRIPTION:This presentation will provide an overview of the Supported Decision-Making Act (Public Act 102-0614) that becomes effective February 2022. Under the Act\, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can name a supporter to assist with decisions in identified areas of their lives such as assisting with finances\, finding a place to live\, medical decisions\, educational decisions\, finding work\, etc. \nSupported decision-making is considered an alternative to guardianship for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who maintain a range of decision-making capacity\, need some assistance with decisions and have not been determined to need a guardian by a court. \nThe presentation will also review the contents of a Supported Decision-Making Agreement and provide examples of how supported decision-making works. \nRegister HERE

Are there general or specific topics you would like to learn more about related to sibling caregiving?\n \nThis Sibposium will be led by Dana Sciullo\, an occupational therapist currently working as Research Associate for the National Down Syndrome Society who has a younger brother with Down syndrome and Mayumi Hagiwara\, an assistant professor in the special education department at the San Francisco State University who has a younger sister with Rubinstein–Taybi syndrome.\n\n\nThe Sibling Leadership Network has two research goals: \n\nTo increase the visibility and accessibility of sibling research\nTo increase awareness about including siblings in research about individuals with disabilities and their families.\n\n\nVisit the SLN research section to learn more about how we are advancing our goals.\n\nTo stay in the know about other SLN programs and events\, sign up for our enews.

This is a solo practice with focus on legislation\, public policy\, government relations\, and educational advocacy for children. Phil also has experience working as a Governmental Relations Consultant by which he provided representation of several associations with a focus on rights of persons with disabilities\, education\, and healthcare access. Currently\, Phil is an active member on the Illinois State Bar Association\, Standing Committee on Disability Law\, Newsletter Editor of Education Law Section Council Delivery of Legal Services and the State Employment and Economic Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities Task Force. Phil attended J.D. DePaul University College of Law and received his B.A. from the University of Illinois-Chicago.\n\n*** Mariel Hamer-Sinclair started out working in the Department of Human Services Division of Rehabilitation Services Home Services Program as a Case Manager. A short time after\, she accepted a position as a Community Work Incentive Coordinator (CWIC) under the Social Security Administration (SSA ) Work Incentive Planning and Assistance Program (WIPA). She became very interested in special education transition services and pursued a position as a Transition Specialist for Chicago Public Schools. For 3.5 years Mariel served 335 schools on the south and west side of Chicago and over 22\,000 transition aged students ages 14 1/5 – 21. In 2016\, she was promoted to Transition Manager. As the Associate Director of Program & Policy for ICDD\, Mariel has a direct role in evaluating and responding to current and future policy and funding issues that might affect the developmental disabilities (DD) community on behalf of ICDD. Mariel received her Master’s degree in Human Service Administration\, Social Services in 2015 from the University of Illinois at Springfield.\n\n*** A self-advocate speaker(s) is invited to present.
