SUMMARY:The Grief and Bereavement Experiences of Children with Intellectual Disabilities

We’re planning something you won’t want to miss\, and we hope to see you there. \n  \nThis presentation will provide the latest research updates on how children with intellectual disabilities (ID) experience and cope with the loss of a significant person in their lives. Attendees will learn practical implications for supporting grieving children during these challenging times. Presenter: Arlen Gaines\, PhD\, MSW\, LCSW-C\, LICSW\, APHSW-C Bio: Arlen Gaines is the Director of Social Services with JSSA Hospice in Rockville\, Maryland\, where she leads the social work\, chaplain\, and volunteer teams\, as well as the bereavement program. After close to 20 years of hospice social work\, she developed a specialization in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities in their grief. She is the co-author of the award-winning I Have a Question series\, which addresses complicated topics for children\, inclusive of those with developmental disabilities\, such as I Have a Question about Death\, and I Have a Question about Cancer. Families may be eligible for help if they’ve been waiting more than 30 days for services or are having trouble getting return calls from their service coordinators. \nEvent Details: \n Joliet Public Library – Ottawa Street Branch (Room 201) \n Monday\, July 14\, 2025 \n 5:00–8:00 PM \n Legal support will be available in both English and Spanish \n Free of charge \nFamilies will meet one-on-one with legal advocates to talk through their situation and receive guidance. Help may include: \n\nRestarting searches to connect with providers\nSecuring compensatory (make-up) services\nReimbursement for services paid out-of-pocket\nNew evaluations if additional services are needed\n(Please note that outcomes vary and are not guaranteed in every case.)\n\nFamilies are encouraged to pre-register using the link in the flyer (also available here) to help Equip for Equality plan staffing and ensure everyone gets timely support. This includes parents with disabilities who need to keep themselves and their children safe during a disaster. Join us as we learn from Shari Myers and Melissa Marshall from the Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies. They will discuss emergency preparedness best practices for disabled parents and their families. Shari and Melissa will talk about building a realistic emergency kit\, sheltering in place while disabled\, and knowing your rights as a disabled person during a disaster.  We also will hear from two National Research Center for Parents with Disabilities’ Advisory Board members\, Judy Brown and Morénike Giwa-Onaiwu\, about their personal experiences with emergency preparedness and disaster response.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will provide ASL interpretation and Zoom automated captions. Megan is a 2023 graduate of the Illinois Partners in Policymaking Program and a 2020 graduate of the LEND Program at UIC\, where she participated as a Family Fellow. Megan is a Charting the LifeCourse Ambassador and a strong proponent of effective person-centered planning practices. Megan’s areas of interest include secondary transition\, family engagement in the educational system\, and developmental disability system navigation. \nKarrie Potter\, Educational Support Coach\nMs. Potter is an Educational Support Coach at Family Matters Parent Training and Information Center\, where she has served families in 94 Illinois counties since 2005.
