SUMMARY:Sibshop by Zoom\, Ages 8 – 12
DESCRIPTION:Online Sibshops for Illinois children and teens\nZoom Sibshops are for children and teens who have a sibling with disabilities. Sibshops are a fun\, sib-focused time to connect and relax with other siblings who get what being a sib is all about! \nFor the adults who run them and for the agencies that sponsor them\, Sibshops are evidence of their loving concern for the family member who will have the longest-lasting relationship with a person who has a disability. However\, for the children and teens who attend them\, Sibshops are fun events where they will meet other sibs (usually for the first time)\, have fun\, laugh\, talk about the challenges AND joys of having a sib with disabilities\, play some great games\, learn something about the services their brothers and sisters receive. \nEspecially during this time when many families are spending more time at home\, siblings are experiencing all kinds of feelings. Meeting other sibs\, talking\, and playing games with one another can help your child feel less alone and more prepared to handle different experiences and situations that arise. \nWe are absolutely thrilled to announce that Emily Holl\, Director of the Sibling Support Project\, and nationally-renowned expert and trainer of the Sibshop model will be facilitating these Zoom Sibshops.\nSibshops: \nTuesday\, June 23\, 3-4:30pm CT (ages 8-12)\nhttps://www.sibsnetwork.org/event/sibshops-ages-8-12/ \nThursday\, June 25\, 3-4:30pm CT (ages 13-18)\nhttps://www.sibsnetwork.org/event/sibshop-ages-13-18  \nPlease register at one of the links above. There is no cost to attend the Sibshop. \nAfter registration\, a Zoom link will be emailed.\nIf you have questions\, please contact amy.halm@siblingleadership.org

SUMMARY:Virtual Town Hall\, from Access Living
DESCRIPTION:Join Access Living for a Virtual Town Hall at 6 p.m. Monday\, July 13 to learn about the Community Emergency Services and Support Act (CESSA)\, an Illinois state bill that would create an alternative emergency response system for people who need help from professionals trained in mental/behavioral crises. \nRegister online today to attend. \nRight now\, the care of Illinoisans experiencing mental and behavioral heath emergencies is left to the police\, who are trained in law enforcement instead of mental health care\, and too often misunderstand the situation. \nTreating these emergencies like a law enforcement activity leads to exacerbation of the healthcare crisis\, unnecessary lock-ups\, and police killings. Black and brown disabled people make up at least half of those killed by police. \nYoung adults of color with disabilities in Access Living’s organizing group Advance Your Leadership Power (AYLP) were involved in creating the CESSA bill in response to the death of young disabled people at the hands of police. \nThis Town Hall will feature people with disabilities\, health professionals\, state legislators and guests talking about why and how this bill will save lives and reduce incarceration rates in Illinois. \nConfirmed speakers include: \n\nIllinois State Senator Robert Peters In his first term as a State Senator\, Peters was the chief co-sponsor of legislation to ban private detention centers and ending “pay to stay” practice in correctional facilities. Recently\, he has spoken out in favor of bail reform\, called for community investment over incarceration\, and has actively supported the Black Lives Matter movement.\nIllinois State Representative Kelly Cassidy Cassidy supported bills to expand job opportunities for ex-offenders\, reduce harsh sentences\, and to mandate that all police officers complete Crisis Intervention Training.\nS’fya Eshe In 2013\, a police officer restrained S’fya at a hospital by pressing on her head and neck\, and S’fya was later transferred to a psychiatric ward.\nEllie Navidson MS\, RN Ellie is a registered nurse with experience in the emergency department\, homeless health\, harm reduction\, and medicated management for substance use.\nRenee Watts  Renee is the sister of Stephon Watts\, a 15-year-old boy with autism who was killed by the police during a mental health crisis.\nSimone Wilson Simone is a mental health advocate\, motivational speaker\, and former special education paraprofessional.\nEmcee: Candace Coleman Racial Justice Community Organizer at Access Living\, AYLP\n\nASL interpretation and CART provided. \nThere will also be time for a Q&A at the end of the Town Hall. \nDue to the limitations of the Zoom webinar platform\, questions submitted during the event via chat are not accessible to participants using screen readers. If you are interested in submitting a question to the panel\, we encourage all attendees to submit a question in advance via this accessible form on our website. \nWe hope you can join us for this important conversation. Register today.
