SUMMARY:How to Respond Effectively to People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center and Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for the webinar. \nDate: Thursday\, July 30\, 2020\nTime:    1:00 – 2:30 PM CT      2:00-3:30 p.m. ET \n  \nPeople with intellectual and developmental disabilities (sometimes known as I/DD) are an often overlooked population in the criminal justice system because of a lack of identification and understanding and service gaps that prevent providers’ abilities to address their needs. At the same time\, they are also often victimized by people without these disabilities\, which can sometimes lead to sustained involvement with the criminal justice system. Criminal justice professionals who want to effectively respond to their service and delivery needs and reduce the prevalence of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the criminal justice system will first need to improve their knowledge and awareness about people in this population. Then\, they must commit to training that is focused specifically on ways to address their needs. \nThis webinar will discuss the prevalence of intellectual and developmental disabilities within people in the criminal justice system and will explain the Pathways to Justice model that can be used to better understand how people with these disabilities become involved in the criminal justice system. It will also feature conversations about common challenges that they face and criminal justice professionals experience when encountering each other at each intercept point. The webinar will also highlight how The Arc’s National Center on Criminal Justice and Disability is supporting professionals with training and technical assistance. \nClosed captioning will be available for this event. \n  \nPanelists: \n\nLeigh Ann Davis\, Director\, Criminal Justice Initiatives\, The Arc\, National Center on Criminal Justice and Disability\nMaria Fryer\, Policy Advisor\, BJA\, U.S. Department of Justice\nAllison Upton\, Project Manager\, Behavioral Health Division\, the CSG Justice Center\n\nRegister for the webinar. \nhttps://csgjusticecenter.org/events/register-now-for-webinar-how-to-respond-effectively-to-people-with-intellectual-developmental-disabilities-in-the-criminal-justice-system/

DESCRIPTION:Speakers:  Jasmina Sisirak\, PhD\, MPH\, Co-Director of the HealthMatters Program\, Department of Disability and Health\, University of Illinois at Chicago and Jennifer Eastman\, MBA\, Director of Community Living Policy at Maryland Department of Disabilities \nAs an often underserved population\, health promotion is even more imperative for people with IDD when living in turbulent communities during a pandemic. During a period of physical distancing and sheltering in place due to COVID-19 pandemic\, community-based organizations (CBOs) are reimagining ways to deliver health promotion programming to people with IDD and exploring options for connecting remotely. SUMMARY:Online Sibshops for Illinois children and teens
DESCRIPTION:  \nOnline Sibshops for Illinois children and teens \nZoom Sibshops are for children and teens who have a sibling with disabilities. Sibshops are a fun\, sib-focused time to connect and relax with other siblings who get what being a sib is all about!\nFor the adults who run them and for the agencies that sponsor them\, Sibshops are evidence of their loving concern for the family member who will have the longest-lasting relationship with a person who has a disability. However\, for the children and teens who attend them\, Sibshops are fun events where they will meet other sibs (usually for the first time)\, have fun\, laugh\, talk about the challenges AND joys of having a sib with disabilities\, play some great games\, learn something about the services their brothers and sisters receive.  \n  \nEspecially during this time when many families are spending more time at home\, siblings are experiencing all kinds of feelings. Meeting other sibs\, talking\, and playing games with one another can help your child feel less alone and more prepared to handle different experiences and situations that arise.  \n  \nSiblings who have attended previous Sibshops are welcome to attend this Sibshop as well! There is no cost to attend the Sibshop! \nSibshops: \nTuesday\, August 4\, 3-4:30pm CT (ages 8-12)\nhttps://www.sibsnetwork.org/event/sibshop-ages-8-12-aug-04-20/ \n After registration\, a Zoom link will be emailed.  \n If you have questions\, please contact Tara Conley at info@sibsnetwork.org. \n  \nThese Sibshops are hosted by the Sibling Leadership Network in partnership with Supporting Illinois Brothers and Sisters with an investment of the Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities. This project is supported in part by grant number CFDA 93.630 from the U.S. Administration for Community Living\, Department of Health and Human Services\, Washington D.C. 20201. Grantees undertaking projects with government sponsorship are encouraged to express freely their findings and conclusions.
