The Parent Advocacy Leadership (PAL) program is a free training series designed to help you navigate the special education process Illinois. \nFamily Resource Center on Disabilities is excited to announce that registration for the Fall PAL Training Cohort of 2022 is open. \nAll training will be virtual. The PAL is eight sessions long. Homework is required \nand must be completed prior to each session. Participants who complete all eight sessions will receive a Parent Advocacy Leadership Certificate of Completion. \nRequirements \n\nWilling to attend all eight sessions\nWilling to complete pre and post-survey\n\nTraining will cover: \nThe Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)\, State Law (Part 226)\, The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)\, Section 504\, Advocacy\, and Current Special Education Issues. \nEach training session will be on Saturday from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm (excluding holidays) via Zoom Meeting. \nThe PAL Session Dates Include: \nSeptember 10th\, September 17th\, September 24th\, October 1st\, October 8th\, October 15th\, October 22nd\, October 29th. \n  \nRegister HERE

DESCRIPTION:Presentation Goals: \n\nLearn about the benefits and challenges associated with running a social enterprise as a small program within a larger nonprofit agency.\nSee how jobs at Harry’s Buttons are customized to the skills of its employees\, maximizing the potential of its workforce.\nMeet some of the people employed at Harrys Buttons and see how the job “works” for them\n\nPresenter: \nJason Reis is the Employment Services Coordinator for Easterseals Serving Chicagoland and Greater Rockford.  He leads a team that creates employment\, job training\, and volunteer opportunities for individuals with autism\, emotional disability\, developmental delay\, and intellectual disability.  He works with the 3 Easterseals Academies in the Chicago and Rockford areas\, and the Harrys Buttons social enterprise.  At the Academies\, Mr. Reis and his team address the lack of employment opportunities for adults with ASD by providing work experiences for students while they are still in school.  Harrys Buttons employs adults with disabilities who make buttons (aka pins)\, magnets\, t-shirts\, and more.  Over the past 2 years\, Mr. Reis has helped create and launch a training program that allows students to explore employment topics through the lens of Harrys Buttons\, giving students an opportunity to learn more about the hard and soft skills that are required to perform various jobs at the social enterprise \nRegister in advance for this webinar: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_4LABDjO7SrCiC6-GSG-BbA \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by STAR NET Region IV \nDuring this workshop (which is based on the Pyramid Model)\, participants will discuss the relationships between challenging behavior and social-emotional development while examining their own attitudes about challenging behavior; and describe the importance of building relationships between children\, families\, and colleagues. \nParticipants will also learn strategies that can be used to build positive relationships with children\, families\, and colleagues and be able to design effective preschool environments. They will learn the importance of consistent schedules and routines; structuring transitions; help children learn rules and routines with clear directions/expectations\, and plan activities that promote engagement. \nThis workshop will also provide an opportunity to look at how to use ongoing monitoring and positive attention to support children’s social behaviors. SUMMARY:Let’s Learn About Supportive Decision Making in Illinois
DESCRIPTION:Supported Decision-Making (SDM) is an alternative to guardianship for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities who need help in making decisions. In February 2022\, Illinois Governor Pritzker signed into law the Supported Decision-Making Act. This presentation will provide the legislative background of the Supported Decision-Making Act\, an overview of supported decision-making in Illinois\, key components of the recently enacted Supported Decision-Making Act\, and examples of supported decision-making in practice. \nSpeaker bio’s \nAdam Wiser is the Project Director for the Illinois Self-Advocacy Alliance\, Inc. (The Alliance). He also serves on the Young Professional Board and is a member of the Advocacy Awareness club at Center for Independent Futures in Evanston IL. He completed the PACE (Path to Academics\, Community and Employment (P.A.C.E) program through National Louis University\, and lives independently in his own apartment with roommates. \nKrescene Beck is part of the Illinois Self-Advocacy Alliance as well as a Co-Director with Blue Tower Solutions\, Inc. She is a licensed Nursing Home Administrator and former Executive Vice President of a large disability service agency. Krescene has spent the past fifteen years years working on statewide grants focused on self-advocacy and on building collaborations to better respond to people with disabilities who experience violence. \nTeresa Parks\, MSW\, NCG is the Deputy Director of the Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy Commission as well as Director of the Commission’s Human Rights Authority. Teresa holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana and is National Certified Guardian through the Center for Guardianship Certification. She is also the parent of two adult children\, including a son with disabilities. \nRegister HERE
