Congratulations Advocates! Your work and voice has resulted in Speaker Ryan announcing that he is pulling the American Health Care Act (AHCA) until further notice. After swinging to the right to appease the Freedom Caucus, earlier today, more moderate Republicans started expressing concerns about the amendments. Eventually after 3 pm, the President and the Speaker decided to let the bill go. Although President Trump has previously indicated that this was it for an ACA repeal, we have not yet heard from the House about whether they plan to go back to the drawing board or just move on to tax reform.
We will need to continue to be vigilant especially around Medicaid block grants/per capita caps but for now on this beautiful Friday afternoon, I want to say THANK YOU for all your calls, emails, tweets and advocacy. This shows the power of Illinois advocates to help to keep community living available.
If your legislator had indicated that they would vote no on the bill, please send them a thank you.
Have a great weekend and great work! Meg
PS: washington post article about the pulling of the bill.
