The Arc of Illinois is sponsoring Bringing It All Together! The Arc of Illinois Living with Autism Conference on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at the Tinley Park Convention Center.
Our main keynote speaker will be Dr. Temple Grandin. Dr. Grandin’s presentation will be: “Autism and My Sensory Based World,” using her own experiences as a guide, Dr. Grandin will examine the role of finding the right job for people on the autism spectrum, where passion becomes the foundation for one’s work. Dr. Grandin will also cover the issue of sensory oversensitivity in autism and how simple modifications in the workplace and the classroom can provide a successful and comfortable environment. Believing the world needs all kinds of minds, she will provide meaning to the current job market. There will be time for questions and answers.
In addition to Dr. Grandin, the following experts on autism will present:
Dr. Andy Bondy, “Guide to Managing Challenging Behaviors.” This workshop outlines a powerful and effective model for dealing with difficult behaviors, including the
most challenging self-injurious behaviors.
Dr. Paula Kluth, “We Thought You’d Never Ask: Voices From the Spectrum.” Dr. Kluth explores the gap between the dominant discourse in autism and the stories of people on the spectrum themselves. She will share excerpts from her documentary film on the voices of people with autism and discuss what the messages from people with autism and Asperger syndrome mean for our daily work in schools and communities.
Barbara Doyle, MS, “Tips and Tricks for Supporting People with Autism.” Effective supports may be easier to deliver than you think! Laugh while learning simple, ready-to-use, support strategies to add to your “bag of tricks.” These tips are helpful for parents, friends and families, educators, school support staff and therapists, and anyone working in the adult services delivery system. Become more effective as a support person in any environment working with any child or adult on the autism spectrum.
