Summary:

Individuals with autism are 32% more likely to have congenital heart defects than neurotypical peers. This presentation is the culmination of an independent study addressing autism and cardiac outcomes. The presentation objectives are to review the anatomy and physiology of the heart, explore congenital heart disease as a medical condition and its impact on physical health, investigate potential genetic connections between autism and congenital heart disease, and identify the implications of exercise implementation for those with the dual diagnosis.Speaker Bio:Emily Vaupel Graduated with a major in psychology and minor in chemistry from Elmhurst College. Post undergraduate degree worked with adolescents and teenagers with serious emotional disturbances in residential treatment. As a lifelong runner, decided to combine passion for working with teens and love of running to become a cross country/track and field coach with Chicago Public Schools. Currently, a Master of Science in Kinesiology degree seeking candidate at UIC, and a recent graduate of the 2022-2023 IL LEND program. Future plans include pursing teaching certification focusing on special education with the goal being to teach and coach teens.
