Presenters: Teresa Parks, Krescene Beck, and Adam Wiser
Adam Wiser is the Project Director for the Illinois Self-Advocacy Alliance, Inc. (The Alliance). He also serves on the Young Professional Board and is a member of the Advocacy Awareness club at Center for Independent Futures in Evanston IL. He lives independently in his own apartment with roommates.
Krescene Beck has a lifetime of experience supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Krescene has spent the past ten years working on statewide grants focused on self-advocacy and on building collaborations to better respond to people with disabilities who experience violence. She is part of the Illinois Self-Advocacy Alliance as well as a Co-Director with Blue Tower Solutions, Inc.
Teresa Parks, MSW, NCG is the Deputy Director of the Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy Commission as well as Director of the Commission’s Human Rights Authority. Currently, Ms Parks serves on the board and education committee of the Illinois Guardianship Association, is an appointed member of the Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities and is a trustee for the Center for Guardianship Certification. Parks is the parent of two adult children, including a son with disabilities.
1 Participants will receive an overview of the Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy Commission.
2. Participants will learn about the legislative background of the Supported Decision-Making Act.
3. Participants will learn about the key components of the Supported Decision-Making Act, including Supporter Duties, Supporter Prohibitions, and the Supported Decision-Making Agreement.
4. Participants will learn about examples of Supported Decision-Making at work.
5. Participants will hear from a Self-Advocate’s Perspective on Supported Decision-Making.
6. Participants will learn about Supported Decision-Making Resources.
