Presented by Supporting Illinois Brothers and Sisters (S.I.B.S.)  Like many grassroots organizations S.I.B.S. was created out of an unmet need in IL.  S.I.B.S. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide support to siblings of people with disabilities in Illinois by connecting them with information, networking opportunities, and resources in order to enhance the quality of life for their entire families. S.I.B.S. began with the dream of one sibling and grew into the first established Illinois non-profit organization in 2007 that supports siblings in Illinois across the lifespan. While support and advocacy have been focused on parents and people with disabilities, siblings have often been left out of the conversation. Siblings play an important role in the lives of their brother or sister with disabilities and have their own unique needs and experiences that should be discussed and addressed. S.I.B.S. strives to partner with people with disabilities, parents, and providers in order to advocate with our siblings so that we can impact services. After all we are stronger together!

About the presenters:  Nora Fox Handler and Tara Conley

Nora Fox Handler is a committed sister to her siblings with disabilities.  She is a founding member and the treasurer of SIBS, Supporting Illinois Brothers and Sisters, and serves on multiple governing boards including the National Sibling Leadership Network, SIBS and The Arc of IL. Tara Conley has worked in the I/DD field for over 30 years. She is the visionary and founder of Supporting Illinois Brothers and Sisters, S.I.B.S. Tara currently acts as the consultant for the S.I.B.S. Sibling Support Project in partnership with the SLN (Sibling Leadership Network) with an investment through the Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities. Her advocacy work for siblings, individuals, and families have been inspired by her younger brother Nick.
